The Grim Discovery at Muktir Bagh
The investigation led authorities to a second-floor flat in a five-storey building owned by a local resident, Shamim Mia, situated in the Muktir Bagh area of Kalindi Union. Neighbours had alerted the police after a “nauseating stench” began to permeate the hallway. Upon breaching the entrance, officers found the apartment seemingly abandoned but soon uncovered the victims’ remains concealed in different parts of the dwelling.
According to Sub-Inspector Md Rony Chowdhury of the Keraniganj Model Police Station, the body of Rokeya Rahman (32) was found stuffed under a bed. In a further macabre twist, the body of her daughter, Fatema (14), was discovered hidden on a bathroom sunshade (a narrow concrete ledge above the door).
Suspects in Custody
Police have arrested two sisters in connection with the killings. The primary suspect is Meem Begum (24), who served as Fatema’s private tutor and lived in the flat where the bodies were found. Her elder sister, Nurjahan Begum (alias Nusrat, 30), was also apprehended. While two other individuals were initially detained for questioning, the focus remains on the motive behind why a teacher would turn on her student and the student’s mother.

A Timeline of Disappearance
The tragedy began on 25 December 2025, when Rokeya and Fatema vanished without a trace. The victims were the family of Md Shahin Mia, a legal assistant, who had filed a General Diary (GD) with the police immediately following their disappearance.
Despite the early report, the family has publicly accused the police of negligence. Relatives claim that despite their pleas, the authorities did not conduct a thorough search of the suspects’ premises until the smell of decay made the crime impossible to ignore.
The bodies have been moved to the Sir Salimullah Medical College (Mitford Hospital) for post-mortem examinations. As the community mourns the loss of the young student and her mother, local leaders are calling for a fast-track trial to ensure the perpetrators face the maximum penalty under the law.
