Bogus Detectives Thwarted During Daytime Abduction Attempt

In a startling display of criminal audacity, three individuals were apprehended in Dhaka’s Demra district on Friday for attempting to kidnap a local resident while masquerading as Detective Branch (DB) officers. The incident, which unfolded in broad daylight near the Fair Haven Blue Tower in Basherpul, was foiled by the quick thinking of the victim and the timely intervention of the local community.

The victim, Md. Sohag, had reportedly stepped out of his home at midday to perform his Friday prayers when he was intercepted by a group of men. The assailants, posing as undercover agents, informed him that he was wanted in connection with a criminal case at the Jatrabari Police Station. In an attempt to intimidate him, one of the suspects, Mahmudul Hasan Khan, allegedly demanded a ransom of 10 lakh Taka to “settle” the matter and spare him from arrest.

When Sohag resisted and attempted to alert his family, the gang’s facade of law enforcement quickly dissolved into violence. The suspects reportedly snatched his wristwatch, valued at 30,000 Taka, and attempted to force him into a waiting white private car. His cries for help alerted nearby residents, who surrounded the vehicle and demanded to see the men’s official identification. Unable to produce any legitimate credentials, two or three members of the gang fled the scene, but three were successfully detained by the public until the Demra Police arrived.

Upon taking custody of the suspects, the police seized a white private car used in the crime, along with two walkie-talkie sets and a charger—tools commonly employed by such gangs to mimic the appearance of genuine plainclothes officers. While the trio has admitted to their roles during preliminary interrogation, they have thus far refused to divulge the whereabouts of their fugitive accomplices.

Inspector (Investigation) Md. Murad Hossain (PPM) of Demra Police Station confirmed that a case has been filed by the victim. He stated that the arrested men are scheduled to be produced in court on Saturday, while police operations continue to track down the remaining members of the syndicate. This incident serves as a grim reminder of the persistent “fake detective” menace in the capital, urging citizens to remain vigilant when approached by individuals in plain clothes claiming official authority.
