Brahmanbaria Protests Former Student Leader Murder

Residents of Brahmanbaria, alongside the family of the late former Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader Saddam Hossain, staged a protest march and assembly demanding the execution of Delwar Hossain Dilip, the district volunteer league chief and the prime accused in Saddam’s murder case. Demonstrators also called for Dilip’s immediate expulsion from the volunteer league.

The protest commenced at 11:00 am on Sunday, 11 January, from the Kandipara area of the town. The march proceeded along the city’s main streets before culminating in a large assembly outside the Brahmanbaria Press Club.

Speakers at the rally included local businessman Abul Hasnat Bhajan, joint convener of the district Krishak Dal Al-Amin, as well as Saddam Hossain’s mother Khodeja Begum and his wife Farzana Akter Trina, alongside other local residents.

They recounted the horrific events of 27 November, when Saddam Hossain, a resident of Kandipara, was lured from his home and brutally shot and stabbed to death. The attack was allegedly carried out by Delwar Hossain Dilip and his associates, who are regarded as some of the district’s most notorious criminals. Protesters demanded that Dilip be executed, expelled from the volunteer league, and that his arsenal of weapons be seized immediately.

The murder case was formally filed on 28 November by Saddam’s father, Mostofa Kamal, also known as Mostu Mia, at Brahmanbaria Sadar Model Police Station. The case names seven individuals, with Dilip identified as the primary accused. Subsequently, on 1 December, members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) apprehended Dilip and his accomplice Babul in the Basabo area of Dhaka.

According to police records, Dilip faces at least 19 cases registered with Brahmanbaria Sadar Model Police Station, including charges of murder, extortion, and other violent crimes.

The protesters warned that without strict legal action against Dilip and his associates, public safety in the district would remain at serious risk. They urged the authorities to ensure justice is served promptly and transparently to prevent further unrest.
