Brother Accused of Killing Elder Sibling with Spade

A 38-year-old grocery shopkeeper was allegedly killed by his younger brother during a family dispute in Boalkhali upazila of Chattogram, police said. Two women have been arrested in connection with the murder case, while the main accused, the victim’s younger brother, remains at large.

The deceased was identified as Md Nezam Uddin, a resident of Ghoshkhil village in the Madhyam Shakpura area of Shakpura Union, under Ward 9 of Boalkhali upazila. He was the eldest son of the late Abdul Halim and worked as a grocery shopkeeper in the locality.

The incident reportedly took place at the Achu Talukdar residence in Ghoshkhil village on Tuesday afternoon, 28 July. According to the information provided by police and the case statement, a family dispute broke out at the residence and subsequently escalated into violence. At one point, Nezam Uddin was allegedly struck with a spade, leaving him critically injured. He later died in the incident.

The exact cause of the family dispute has not yet been disclosed by police. Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances leading up to the confrontation and determine what triggered the alleged assault.

Following the incident, police recovered Nezam Uddin’s body and sent it to the morgue of Chattogram Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The examination is expected to provide further information relevant to the investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

Later on Tuesday night, the victim’s wife, Mosammat Paria Tanha Maima, filed a murder case with Boalkhali Police Station. The case names the victim’s younger brother, Md Jamal Uddin Suman, 36, as the principal accused.

Two other people have also been named as accused in the case. They are Halima Begum, 70, identified as the victim’s mother-in-law, and Sanjida Akter Popy, 26, described as the wife of the victim’s younger brother.

Police subsequently arrested Halima Begum and Sanjida Akter Popy in connection with the case. They were later produced before a court and sent to jail, according to Boalkhali police.

However, the principal accused, Jamal Uddin Suman, remains absconding. Police said efforts are continuing to locate and arrest him. His arrest could be significant for investigators seeking to establish the sequence of events and determine the individual roles of those named in the case.

Boalkhali Police Station officer-in-charge Mozaffar Hossain confirmed that the two arrested suspects had been sent to jail through the court after the murder case was filed. He also said police operations to apprehend the principal accused were continuing.

The incident has drawn attention in the local community because it allegedly arose from a dispute within the same family and resulted in a fatal attack. Residents are now waiting for the investigation to establish what led to the confrontation and whether anyone else was involved.

The police investigation will also examine the allegations against each of the accused and collect relevant evidence before further legal action is taken. As the case progresses, investigators are expected to rely on witness statements, forensic findings and other evidence to establish the circumstances of Nezam Uddin’s death.

The allegations against the accused have yet to be tested in court. Under the law, all accused persons are presumed innocent unless proven guilty through due legal process.
