Authorities confirmed that the victim, Senora Begum, was the wife of Saber Ahmed, a resident of the same neighbourhood. At the time of the crime, she was alone at home while her husband and son had gone to a nearby mosque to attend the Tarawih prayers.
Eyewitnesses reported that Jana Alam had entered the house intending to steal gold ornaments. When Senora Begum resisted, he reportedly attacked her with a sharp weapon, resulting in her death. In an attempt to evade capture, he put on a burqa, but local residents immediately recognised him and pursued him until the police arrived. Some members of the crowd reportedly attempted to physically assault the accused before law enforcement intervened to maintain order.
The victim’s son, Sekandar Hossain, described the scene:
“My uncle killed my mother while she was alone. When we returned from the Tarawih prayers, we saw that the local people had already detained him before the police arrived.”
The Officer-in-Charge of Halishahar Police Station, Kazi Sultan Mohammad Ahsan Uddin, confirmed that the body had been sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination. A formal murder case is being prepared, and Jana Alam is expected to be presented in court shortly.
