Brutal Assassination of Editor and Businessman in Monirampur

The tranquil atmosphere of Kapalia Bazaar in Jashore was shattered on Monday evening by the gruesome execution of a local entrepreneur and journalist. Rana Pratap Bairagi, aged 38, who balanced his time between managing a commercial ice plant and serving as the acting editor for the Narail-based publication Dainik BD Khobor, was targeted in a chillingly methodical attack. Witnesses described a scene of calculated violence that has left the local business community paralysed with fear and raised urgent questions regarding the safety of media figures in the region.

The events transpired at approximately 5:45 PM while Mr Bairagi was overseeing operations at his ice factory. According to local reports, three unidentified men arrived on a motorcycle and beckoned him to leave the premises. Unaware of the impending danger, the victim followed the men to a secluded lane adjacent to the Kapalia Clinic and Diagnostic Centre. It was there that the assailants unleashed a lethal assault, discharging three bullets into his head at close range before using a sharp blade to slit his throat. The victim perished instantly at the scene, while the perpetrators utilised the ensuing chaos to make a swift escape on their vehicle.

Upon receiving word of the homicide, a contingent from the Monirampur Police Station, led by Officer-in-Charge Md. Rajiullah Khan, arrived to secure the area. The OC confirmed the severity of the wounds and noted that the body was being processed for transfer to the Jashore 250-bed General Hospital for a forensic autopsy. While the motive for the slaying remains under active investigation, police have noted that Mr Bairagi had a complex legal history, with four standing cases registered against him in the Abhaynagar and Keshabpur stations.
