A horrific double murder in Barlekha Upazila of Moulvibazar District has plunged the area into deep mourning, fear, and anxiety. Jamal Uddin, the father, and Abdul Kaiyum, the uncle, of Mehedi Hasan Kabir—former Deputy Publicity Secretary of the Moulvibazar district unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League—were brutally killed at their own residence.
The incident took place in BOC Kesharigul village of the Kataltali area under Dakshinbagh North Union of Barlekha Upazila. According to local sources, a short while earlier today miscreants launched a sudden attack on Jamal Uddin and Abdul Kaiyum using sharp weapons. Both sustained critical injuries and died at the scene. It has also been reported that two other individuals were seriously injured in the attack.
Multiple sources allege that the assault was carried out by a group led by Kamal Hossain, a former president of the Kesharigul ward unit of Shibir and currently a Jamaat leader. Locals have mentioned the names of several individuals allegedly involved, including Alim Uddin, Faisal, Ahid, Kamal, Ahad, Aziz, Zamir, Harun, Shimul, Haidar, Nanu, Ali, Jabbar, Suhel, Kashem, Quddus, and members of the Dudu group. However, these allegations have not yet been officially confirmed by law enforcement authorities.
Following the brutal killings, extreme panic has spread throughout the locality. The families of the victims are overwhelmed with grief. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and no immediate official explanation has been provided.
Police arrived at the scene after receiving the report and have begun their investigation. Local residents have demanded the swift arrest of those responsible and exemplary punishment under the law.
It is worth noting that Mehedi Hasan Kabir previously served as Deputy Publicity Secretary of the Moulvibazar district unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League. The tragic killing of his family members has triggered strong reactions across political circles as well as within the local community.
