The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has cautioned mobile phone users against believing rumours circulating online regarding the servers and IP addresses of the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) system. The regulatory body urged citizens not to be misled by misinformation spreading across social media and other digital platforms.
In a special statement released on its verified Facebook page on Tuesday, 13 January, BTRC emphasised that the NEIR system was launched on 1 January under government directive to combat illegal mobile imports, prevent handset theft, curb crimes involving unauthorised devices, and secure government revenue.
Since its launch, some online posts have questioned the location of the system’s servers and the origin of its IP addresses. BTRC clarified that all NEIR data is securely hosted within Bangladesh, using the Commission’s own hardware. The system complies fully with the Government of Bangladesh’s Data Protection Law, ensuring the safety and privacy of all user information.
Furthermore, the IP addresses utilised by the NEIR system have been allocated locally by APNIC in favour of a Bangladesh-based institution. Consequently, no system data or traffic is transmitted outside the country. All NEIR system requests are processed entirely within Bangladesh, guaranteeing full operational sovereignty and security.
BTRC also confirmed, following a detailed review of IP routes, that the system’s internal network remains securely based within the country. The Commission urged citizens to avoid falling for any rumours or misinformation regarding NEIR, and to rely solely on official BTRC communications for guidance.
The table below summarises key aspects of the NEIR system for public understanding:
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| System Name | National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) |
| Launch Date | 1 January 2026 |
| Objectives | Prevent illegal imports, theft, and handset-related crime; protect government revenue |

Experts note that the NEIR system represents a major step forward in mobile network security and consumer protection, ensuring both lawful use of handsets and safeguarding citizens’ private data. BTRC’s warning aims to prevent unnecessary panic and maintain trust in the newly implemented system.
