In West Saralia village of Baliadangi upazila, Thakurgaon, the burial of a 70-year-old man was delayed for 23 hours after his only son refused to accept the body due to a long-standing land dispute. Talsim Uddin, who had been living with his daughter because his son did not support him, passed away on Sunday evening from natural causes related to old age.
Relatives brought the body to his home that night to perform the burial, but his son, Mohsin Ali, prevented it from entering the house. As a result, the deceased was kept on the veranda of his brother’s residence. Mohsin claimed that his father’s death was suspicious, citing the transfer of property to his daughters as a motive, and subsequently filed a complaint at the local police station.
Local residents intervened to mediate the situation. With the assistance of police, the dispute was resolved on Monday afternoon, allowing the burial to take place at 4 pm following the funeral prayer.
Hobibur Rahman, a member of the union parishad, stated that the disagreement had arisen over the division of land. After discussions between both parties, an understanding was reached, enabling the burial to proceed peacefully.
OC Darul Huda of Baliadangi Police Station emphasised that the matter was entirely familial. With no suspicion of foul play remaining, permission was granted to conduct the burial without a post-mortem examination.
