Police in Noakhali’s Chatkhil upazila have recovered the partially decomposed and burnt body of a 32-year-old man, in a case that is now being investigated as a suspected murder.
The deceased, identified as Md Khokon, a day labourer by profession, was found late on Sunday night (6 April) in a bush near “Muntir Pool” in Daulatpur village under Chatkhil municipality. Law enforcement officials believe the victim may have been killed elsewhere before his body was set on fire and dumped at the scene.
According to Chatkhil Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Mannaf, the condition of the body suggested that it had been burnt after death. However, he stressed that a definitive conclusion will depend on forensic examination and the post-mortem report.
Family members and local residents said Khokon, son of Md Faruk Hossain of Hossain Ali Patwari Bari in the same area, had been missing since Thursday night. He reportedly left home around 10 pm after receiving a phone call from an unknown number. He did not return thereafter.
After extensive searches failed to locate him, his family filed a general diary with Chatkhil Police Station on Saturday night (GD No. 190), reporting him missing.
Locals later discovered a foul smell emanating from a bushy area near Daulatpur village on Sunday night. Upon inspection, they found the partially decomposed remains and immediately informed the police. Officers later recovered the body and sent it to Noakhali General Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Police and residents suspect that the victim may have been beaten and subsequently burned by unidentified assailants before the body was dumped in the secluded area in an attempt to conceal the crime. An investigation has been launched to determine the motive and identify those responsible.
A murder case has been filed by the victim’s family against unknown individuals.
