At least four people have been killed and a further 15 sustained serious injuries in a head-on collision between two passenger buses operated by Marssa Paribahan on the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar Highway in Lohagara upazila of Chattogram district.
The accident occurred at around 11:00 am on Saturday (9 May) in the Chunti Union area, in front of the Hotel Four Seasons along the highway. The incident has been confirmed by Lohagara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Abdullah.
According to police and eyewitness accounts, one bus was travelling towards Chattogram while the other was heading in the direction of Cox’s Bazar. Both vehicles belonged to the same transport company. During movement, the buses reportedly attempted to communicate with each other, after which both drivers lost control, resulting in a violent collision. The impact caused one of the buses to veer off the road and crash into a roadside shop. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage to their front sections.
Following the collision, local residents rushed to the scene and began rescue operations before emergency services arrived. One female passenger was recovered dead at the site. Fire Service officials later confirmed that additional victims were pulled from the wreckage, and injured passengers were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
Firoz Khan, Station Officer of Lohagara Fire Service, stated that the severity of the impact and subsequent loss of control contributed to multiple fatalities. He added that three of the injured later died while undergoing treatment at the Lohagara Trauma Centre. The identities of the deceased had not been confirmed at the time of reporting.
The accident led to severe disruption along the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar Highway, with traffic coming to a standstill for several kilometres on both sides. Vehicles were stranded for an extended period before police and highway authorities cleared the wreckage and restored partial movement.
Officers from the Dohazari Highway Police Station confirmed that the injured were transported to hospitals as quickly as possible. They also stated that legal procedures are underway, and the bodies of the deceased will be handed over to their families once formalities are completed.
