The Bangladesh Automobile Workshop Owners Association has called for the withdrawal of eviction plans affecting 172 automobile workshops located in the Motijheel–Kamalapur area of Dhaka.
The appeal was made on Sunday, 12 April, at a press conference held at the National Press Club in Dhaka. Representatives of the association stated that the organisation is registered under the Ministry of Commerce and is affiliated with the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI).
According to the association, the 172 workshops operating in the Motijheel–Kamalapur area are included under its membership and have been functioning in the locality for approximately 25 years. The organisation urged that these establishments should not be removed through eviction measures.
During the briefing, it was stated that automobile workshops in Bangladesh play a role in maintaining the country’s transport and communication systems. The association further described each workshop as not only a commercial enterprise but also a practical training centre, where skilled technicians are developed through private investment by entrepreneurs. It was also stated that trained workers from this sector have opportunities for overseas employment, contributing remittances to the national economy.
The association further noted that workshop owners in the sector regularly pay value-added tax and other applicable taxes, contributing to government revenue. It was argued that any sudden eviction of long-established workshops in the Motijheel–Kamalapur area could place thousands of workers, employees, and their families in a state of uncertainty. The association also stated that such action could potentially disrupt aspects of the transport service network.
The organisation called upon the relevant authorities to suspend eviction activities, allow sufficient time for any transition, and ensure structured rehabilitation measures for affected workshops to support sustainable continuation of the sector.
The press conference was attended by the President of the Bangladesh Automobile Workshop Owners Association, Engineer Md Jahangir Alam, along with other members of the organisation.
