A special musical and literary evening titled “Apon Aloy Shahid Mahmud Jangi: Gane Gane Sattor” will be held on 12 December to honour the life, creativity and enduring influence of eminent Bangladeshi lyricist Shahid Mahmud Jangi. The programme marks the approaching 70th birthday of the celebrated songwriter, who will reach the milestone on 6 February 2026, and pays tribute to his profound contribution to Bangladesh’s band music movement.
Shahid Mahmud Jangi occupies a distinctive place in the cultural history of Bangladesh. During the transformative decades of the 1980s and 1990s, when band music was finding a powerful new voice, his lyrics helped define the emotional and social language of the era. Songs penned by Jangi resonated deeply with listeners, blending poetic sensitivity with themes of love, identity, social awareness and time’s relentless passage. Many of these works remain widely sung and cherished today.
Among his best-known compositions are “Hridoy kadamatir kono murti noy”, “Aaj je shishu prithibir aloy eshechhe”, “Ami bhule jai tumi amar now”, “Jotiner sirer klase”, “Tritiyo Bishwo” and “Shomoy jeno kate na”. His words have been brought to life by some of the country’s most influential bands, including Souls, Renaissance and LRB, as well as by numerous solo artistes. Remarkably, even after decades of creative work, Jangi continues to write, underscoring a lifelong commitment to music and expression.
The commemorative event is being organised by Ajob Karkhana and will take place at the Russian House in Dhanmondi, beginning at 5:00 pm. The evening will open with remarks and reflections from invited guests, offering personal insights into Jangi’s artistic journey and cultural impact. This will be followed by the launch of a commemorative book bearing the same title as the event.
