A tragic road accident on the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar highway in Chakaria has claimed the lives of two motorcyclists and left another person seriously injured, casting a shadow of grief over the local community. The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, amid reports of reckless driving and poor road discipline.
According to eyewitness accounts and police sources, the collision took place at approximately 4:15 am in the Villager Para area of Boraitoli Union, in front of the residence of Karim, a local cook. A passenger bus travelling from Chattogram towards Cox’s Bazar is believed to have been moving at excessive speed when it became involved in a chain collision with multiple vehicles travelling in the same lane, including two motorcycles and an unidentified truck.
The impact proved fatal for two close friends who were riding together on one of the motorcycles. The deceased have been identified as Shariful Islam (30), son of Shahidul Islam Bhuiyan from Atipara area under Uttar Khan Police Station in Dhaka Metropolitan, and Raiul Islam Shishir (30), son of Oliul Islam. The two friends had reportedly set out together on a journey towards Cox’s Bazar when the accident occurred.
A third passenger travelling with them sustained severe injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital by locals. Medical sources indicate that the injured individual remains in critical condition.
Police from the Chirang Highway Police Station quickly arrived at the scene following reports of the crash. They carried out rescue operations, recovered the bodies, and transported the injured to hospital. The bus involved in the collision, along with one of the motorcycles, has been seized for investigation. Authorities have confirmed that legal procedures are underway and the bodies will be handed over to the victims’ families after post-mortem examinations.
Preliminary assessments suggest that excessive speed, failure to maintain safe distance, and reduced visibility during the night may have contributed to the fatal crash. Locals have expressed deep concern over the recurring nature of such accidents on the busy highway, particularly during late-night and early-morning hours when traffic management is limited.
The Chakaria stretch of the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar highway is known for heavy traffic congestion, especially during the tourist season when large numbers of vehicles travel towards the coastal district. Residents and transport observers have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of speed limits, improved monitoring, and stronger road safety measures to prevent further loss of life.
