ChakSU Leader Assault Sparks Outcry

A senior leader of the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (ChakSU) was brutally attacked in Hathazari Upazila, Chattogram, while he was purchasing fuel, triggering widespread concern and tension among students and locals. The injured representative, Masum Billah, who serves as ChakSU’s Library and Cafeteria Affairs Secretary, is currently receiving treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital in a critical condition.

The incident reportedly took place at around 8:00 pm on Monday at the M. Alam filling station near the Hathazari bus stand. According to eyewitness accounts and university sources, Masum Billah arrived on a motorcycle to refuel when a group of several young men suddenly launched a coordinated assault. The attackers, allegedly armed with sharp weapons and blunt objects, struck him repeatedly before fleeing the scene.

He sustained serious injuries to his head, the area above his eyes, and multiple parts of his body. Fellow students at the scene quickly rescued him and initially took him to the University of Chittagong medical centre for emergency treatment. Due to the severity of his condition, he was subsequently transferred to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital, where he remains under intensive observation.

Medical officials have confirmed that the injured student has deep lacerations above the eye and significant head trauma, necessitating advanced diagnostic procedures including a CT scan. Doctors also noted multiple bodily injuries consistent with an organised attack.

Speaking about the incident, Masum Billah alleged that the attack was linked to a prior dispute arising from a university-level mediation meeting concerning compensation for a road accident involving a student. He claimed that he had participated in the negotiation process where a compensation settlement of 20,000 Bangladeshi taka was secured for an affected student in the presence of university administration, police officials, and ChakSU representatives. According to him, his involvement in that process may have led to personal enmity and a planned retaliatory assault.

ChakSU’s Law and Human Rights Affairs Secretary, Fazle Rabbi, stated that the attack was allegedly led by an individual named Rafiqul Islam. A formal case has already been filed at the Hathazari Police Station under Bangladesh Police, and an investigation is underway to identify and apprehend those involved.

The administration of the University of Chittagong has condemned the incident and confirmed that immediate medical assistance was ensured for the injured student. University authorities further stated that the Vice-Chancellor is closely monitoring the situation and has instructed law enforcement agencies to take swift action.

The attack has sparked strong reactions across the campus community, with students and ChakSU leaders demanding the immediate arrest of the perpetrators and exemplary punishment. Local residents have also expressed concern over deteriorating security conditions in the area, particularly around key commercial and transport points such as fuel stations. Authorities have assured that the investigation is ongoing and further legal steps will follow based on evidence gathered.
