Channel i Revives Bengal’s Folk Music Tradition

In an ambitious effort to rejuvenate Bengal’s rich folk music heritage, Channel i has launched a new television series, “i Folk Fever.” The programme combines the timeless charm of traditional melodies with the energy of contemporary performers, featuring both celebrated veterans and popular new-generation singers. Scheduled to air across 23 episodes, the series promises to introduce audiences to the depth and diversity of Bengal’s folk repertoire.

The organisers describe the show as a bridge between generations, designed to connect young viewers with the roots of folk music while preserving its cultural significance.

The first recording, held last Monday at the Channel i studio, featured the iconic singer Sabina Yasmin, who performed five beloved folk songs. Known for her versatility in classical, modern, patriotic, and film music, Sabina Yasmin expressed her delight at performing multiple folk songs in a single programme:

“Folk songs are the heart of our soil and culture. While I have sung these songs in various contexts, performing several in one episode is a unique and enjoyable experience. I am thankful to Channel i for supporting such initiatives and especially grateful to Jahangir Saeed for inviting me.”

The series showcases a wide array of talent, including Rafiqul Alam, Khurshid Alam, Konokchapa, Ferdous Ara, Salma, Liza, Luifa, Sagar Dewan, Aleya Boyati, Akkas Dewan, Kajol Dewan, Jhilk, Mukta Sarkar, Parvez, Ashik, Akash Mahmud, and Nakul Kumar Biswas. The programme is produced by Iftekhar Munim Ahsan and creatively directed by Jahangir Saeed.

Veteran singer Ferdous Ara emphasised the cultural importance of the series:

“Folk music carries our history, our joys, sorrows, love stories, and the essence of nature. Engaging the younger generation with these songs will strengthen our musical heritage. Channel i’s initiative is truly commendable.”

Rafiqul Alam added,

“Our country possesses an extraordinary folk music legacy, but many songs are at risk of being forgotten. Television offers a platform to revive and showcase them to a broader audience, making this project extremely timely.”

Khurshid Alam echoed these sentiments:

“Folk music is not merely entertainment; it represents our history and culture. Performing alongside young artists is a joy, and I hope this initiative reaches and inspires many viewers.”

i Folk Fever is expected to play a pivotal role in promoting Bengal’s folk music, helping preserve these traditional songs and ensuring their appreciation among new generations.
