Chattogram Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB-North) has successfully apprehended Shahab Uddin Shabu, 34, a prominent leader of a local extortion and terror network, along with his associate Md. Parvez, 37. The arrests were executed in the early hours of Friday, 6 March, near the entrance gate of Arakan Society under Panchlaish Police Station. Authorities say the operation has dealt a significant blow to organised crime in the city.
According to DB officials, Shahab Uddin Shabu is the brother of Shahidul Islam Buishya and a key architect behind numerous criminal activities across Chattogram, including extortion, robbery, and acts of terror. Shabu is currently facing six cases under the Speedy Trial Act, encompassing charges ranging from firearms possession and drug offences to attempted murder, theft, and extortion. His associate, Md. Parvez, is implicated in a robbery case and is under investigation.
Deputy Police Commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (DB-North), Habibur Rahman, said, “The arrest of Shahab Uddin Shabu and his associate represents a major disruption to the operations of organised crime in Chattogram. We are actively pursuing the remaining members of this network and will continue to ensure their swift apprehension.”
Shahidul Islam Buishya, who is currently imprisoned and facing 27 criminal cases, is widely recognised as the mastermind of multiple terror and extortion activities in the city. Police hope that the capture of Shabu and Parvez will significantly reduce the operational capabilities of this gang.
