Chattogram Police Investigate Brutal Killing of Local Night Guard

Police in Rauzan, Chattogram have recovered the gruesomely mutilated body of 70-year-old Shafiul Alam Chowdhury, also known as Shafi, nearly 41 hours after he went missing. The elderly man served as a night watchman at a local market.

The body was discovered on Saturday, 20 December, at around 11 a.m., in a walled, open space adjacent to Jangal Rauzan Government Primary School in Ward 9 of Rauzan Municipality. Shafi was a resident of Gura Mia Chowdhury’s house in Wahedkhil village of the same ward and was the son of the late Amir Ali Chowdhury.

Shafi had been serving as a night watchman at Charabatol Market in Rauzan for nearly a year. According to his wife, Dilu Ara Begum, he left home on Thursday evening around 6 p.m., carrying dinner to the market, and never returned. After an unsuccessful search over several locations, a general diary (GD) was filed at Rauzan Police Station on Friday night.

The next morning, a local resident named Sujon spotted a body lying in the area and alerted the family. Upon reaching the scene, family members identified the deceased as Shafi. Police later recovered the body.

Shafi’s son, Ishak Chowdhury, alleged that the killing was premeditated and demanded a thorough investigation with exemplary punishment for those responsible. His brother-in-law, Md. Jasim Uddin, stated that a few days prior, a mentally unstable individual had an altercation with Shafi in the market, which may be linked to the murder. However, he added that the identities of all involved remain uncertain.

Rauzan Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Sajedul Islam, confirmed that a body condition report has been prepared, and the body has been sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination. Assistant Police Superintendent (Rangunia Circle), Belayet Hossain, stated that the exact cause of death will be determined after the post-mortem report, and appropriate legal action is underway.

The discovery has left the local community shocked, particularly given Shafi’s long-standing role as a night watchman who was known for his diligence and integrity.
