A 25-year-old man, Md. Mahim, died after falling from a six-storey building in Anwara, Chattogram, early on Tuesday (10 March). The incident took place outside the Hashem Complex near the Anwara Upazila Health Complex.
Md. Mahim, son of Md. Abul Kamal from Daulatpur in Barautthan Union of Karnaphuli Upazila, had been living in Sholkata village of Barkhain Union for several years.
Authorities reported that Mahim was a known member of the teenage gang `Samrat Group’ and had a criminal record. The Anwara police have his photograph and name on file, and he had previously been arrested multiple times for theft and robbery.
Sequence of Events
Police and local sources stated that emergency services were alerted early in the morning. Mahim was discovered injured outside the building and taken to the Upazila Health Complex. Medical staff declared him dead upon arrival.
News of his death quickly attracted a crowd of relatives and associates to the hospital. Tensions escalated when the crowd clashed with police, resulting in damage to the emergency department doors and the main hospital gate being locked. Military and police units intervened to bring the situation under control.
Mahim’s mother, Monowara Begum, alleged that her son had been called out of the house around 1:30 AM despite being at home at 10 PM. She expressed suspicion of foul play and demanded a fair and thorough investigation.
Building owner Abul Hashem stated that he resides in the city and would provide information about the incident if present at the scene. Dr. Mahtabuddin Chowdhury, Family Planning Officer at Anwara Upazila Health Complex, confirmed that the crowd became agitated after learning of Mahim’s death, leading to damage of hospital property.
Anwara Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Md. Junayet Chowdhury, said the body had been sent for autopsy. Preliminary investigations suggest that Mahim may have fallen while attempting to commit a burglary. He also noted that Mahim faced four ongoing criminal cases registered at Anwara police station.
