Piyush Chawla’s masterful spin performance propelled Abu Dhabi Knight Riders (ADKR) to a comfortable four-wicket win over Gulf Giants, in a match that highlighted the combination of tactical bowling and aggressive batting. Chawla’s four-wicket haul (4-27) became the defining factor in the game, as ADKR registered their second successive win in the ILT20 and third overall in the competition.
Gulf Giants elected to bat first, hoping to post a formidable total. Rahmanullah Gurbaz delivered a breathtaking display, scoring 72 runs off just 45 balls, filled with audacious strokes and a towering six to reach 6,000 T20 runs – a career landmark celebrated by fans and teammates alike. Pathum Nissanka showcased a brief burst of brilliance before falling to Olly Stone, while captain James Vince contributed with a stylish cover-drive and a crisp backfoot punch to keep momentum on the Giants’ side.
Chawla’s entry into the attack in the seventh over proved decisive. The leg-spinner claimed Vince with his first delivery, then removed Moeen Ali with a brilliant googly, followed by Azmatullah Omarzai and Matthew Forde in successive balls. This devastating spell reduced the Giants to 135 for six in the 16th over. Despite Gurbaz’s valiant efforts, the Giants could only reach 165 for seven by the conclusion of their innings, a target that, while challenging, was not insurmountable.
ADKR’s reply was initiated by Phil Salt and Alex Hales, who tore into the Giants’ bowling from the outset. Salt struck consecutive boundaries off the first two deliveries, and together with Hales, ensured a brisk start of 53 runs without loss by the PowerPlay’s end. However, Tabraiz Shamsi struck crucial blows, removing Salt and Liam Livingstone in successive overs, giving the Giants a lifeline. Sherfane Rutherford added firepower with a scintillating 16-run 14th over, including 4, 6, and 6, to maintain the momentum.
ADKR faced a mini-collapse, losing three wickets in three overs and falling to 138 for five after 17 overs – a precarious position reminiscent of the Giants’ own struggles in the first innings. It was Andre Russell who turned the match on its head with sheer brute force, hitting two mammoth sixes to seal the win and remove any lingering doubt about the outcome.
Chawla’s brilliant bowling, combined with Hales and Salt’s aggressive strokeplay and Russell’s finishing power, made the difference between the two sides. ADKR’s clinical performance signals their serious ambitions in the ILT20, while the Giants will be left to rue the missed chances, despite an admirable effort from Gurbaz.
