Professor Muhammad Yunus, chief adviser to the interim government, has expressed profound concern over the serious shooting of Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of the Inqilab Mancha and a potential independent candidate for Dhaka-8, by assailants in the Bijoynagar area of the capital. The incident has sent shockwaves through the political community and the general public, highlighting the precarious security situation during the election period.
The chief adviser described such violence in the electoral environment as wholly unacceptable. He noted that attacks like this are extremely regrettable for the country’s peaceful political domain and create fear and uncertainty among citizens. He emphasised that the government has a fundamental responsibility to ensure the safety of every candidate, their supporters, and all those participating in the democratic process.
In light of Hadi’s critical condition, the chief adviser instructed all relevant authorities to take every necessary measure to guarantee he receives the highest standard of medical care. He directed the Ministry of Health to provide detailed guidance for closely monitoring Hadi’s treatment, coordinating with hospital authorities, and ensuring the availability of all essential medical equipment and specialist doctors. The adviser stressed the importance of continuous supervision to safeguard Hadi’s recovery.
Simultaneously, law enforcement agencies have been ordered to promptly identify and bring all individuals involved in the attack under the law. The chief adviser highlighted the need for immediate actions, including collecting evidence from the scene, recording statements from eyewitnesses, reviewing CCTV footage, and investigating any organised planning or networks behind the assault.
The chief adviser stated, “Any form of violence intended to disrupt the election will not be tolerated. Ensuring public safety and the free movement of candidates is our responsibility. Those responsible, regardless of identity, will be brought to justice.”
He also appealed to all political parties, activists, supporters, and citizens to maintain peace, restraint, and civic responsibility, emphasising that such conduct is essential for the upcoming election to take place in a safe, inclusive, and orderly environment.
The shooting has caused widespread alarm among political circles and the wider public. Violence in the lead-up to an election is entirely unacceptable. Government authorities, law enforcement, and health officials are actively monitoring the situation and taking all necessary measures to maintain control, ensure medical care, and protect all political participants. The focus remains on a thorough investigation of the attack while safeguarding the integrity and safety of the electoral process.
