Child injured in border clash, Myanmar envoy summoned

Dhaka, 13 January 2026 – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh has summoned Myanmar’s Ambassador to Dhaka, U Kyaw So Moe, following a recent shooting incident along the Bangladesh–Myanmar border in the Hoiakyaung Union of Teknaf Upazila, Cox’s Bazar. The incident, which left a 12-year-old boy critically injured, has triggered deep concern and firm protest from the Bangladeshi government.

The meeting, held on Tuesday afternoon, provided Bangladesh with an opportunity to convey its position clearly and unequivocally. According to officials, the young boy, identified as Huzayfa, sustained serious injuries during the unprovoked gunfire, an act described as both “disturbing” and “unacceptable” by authorities.

Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that the firing across its territory constitutes a blatant violation of international law and threatens the longstanding bilateral relationship between the two countries. Officials warned that such actions exacerbate insecurity along the border and place ordinary civilians at significant risk.

During the diplomatic meeting, Bangladesh urged Myanmar to accept full responsibility for the incident and called for effective and visible measures to ensure that similar border violations do not recur. The Bangladeshi delegation emphasised that, irrespective of internal situations within Myanmar—including activities of armed groups or local authorities—the protection of Bangladeshi citizens and their livelihoods must not be compromised.

In response, Ambassador U Kyaw So Moe expressed regret on behalf of the Myanmar government and conveyed condolences to the injured child and his family. He assured Bangladeshi authorities that steps would be taken to prevent future incidents and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability along the shared border.

The meeting reiterated Bangladesh’s firm stance on border security and regional stability, highlighting the government’s resolve to safeguard its citizens and uphold international norms.
