China expresses deep condolences on Begum Khaleda Zia’s death

China has expressed deep condolences following the death of Begum Khaleda Zia, the Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the country’s first female Prime Minister. In a letter addressed to Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Adviser, Md. Tauhid Hossain, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi conveyed his profound sorrow on Tuesday, 30 December.

In his letter, Wang Yi stated: “I am deeply saddened to hear the news of her passing and extend my heartfelt condolences to you.” He highlighted Khaleda Zia’s longstanding role as a senior politician in Bangladesh, noting her active support for fostering friendly ties between China and Bangladesh.

During her tenure as Prime Minister, Khaleda Zia played a pivotal role in strengthening bilateral relations, establishing a partnership based on long-term friendship, equality, and mutual benefit. China expressed appreciation for her significant contributions to the development of China–Bangladesh relations.

Begum Khaleda Zia passed away at 6:00 am on Tuesday at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. She was 80 years old at the time of her death and had been undergoing medical treatment prior to her passing.
