Chittagong University Student Seriously Injured in Shuttle Train Stone Attack

A shocking incident at Chittagong University has left a female student seriously injured after a stone was hurled at the campus shuttle train. The attack, which occurred on Tuesday at approximately 11:30 a.m., caused deep cuts to the student’s nose and lips, prompting immediate medical attention.

The victim, Imu Moni Jyoti, is a resident of Patenga, Chittagong, and a student of the Department of International Relations. University sources reported that she boarded the shuttle train at Sholoshohor Railway Station en route to campus. As the train approached the Cantonment Station, a stone was allegedly thrown from outside, striking her face and causing significant injury.

Fellow passengers acted quickly to stem the bleeding and provide first aid. Ms Jyoti was initially taken to the Chittagong University Medical Centre, where her wounds were assessed. Due to the severity of the injuries, she was subsequently transferred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for specialised treatment.

A classmate, Tawhidul Islam, described the injuries: “She received four stitches on her upper lip. After preliminary treatment, she was able to return home.”

Dr Mohammad Abu Tayeb, the acting medical officer at the university’s medical centre, confirmed the transfer: “She was brought to the hospital around 12:30 p.m. The wound was deep, so we referred her to Chittagong Medical College for further care.”

University officials have expressed serious concern over the incident. Assistant Proctor Professor Md. Bazlur Rahman said, “This was an unfortunate and completely unacceptable event. We will take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of our students and enhance campus security immediately.”

The attack has sparked anxiety among students and highlighted vulnerabilities in the university’s transport system. The administration has assured that security on the shuttle train and surrounding campus areas will be strengthened to prevent future incidents.
