Chittagong University has suspended all classes and scheduled examinations for a second consecutive day due to persistent adverse weather conditions, waterlogging and transport disruptions. The university authorities announced the decision after the situation failed to improve, citing safety concerns for students, teachers and staff.
The announcement was made through a notice signed by the university’s Acting Registrar, Professor Dr Mohammad Saiful Islam, at around 10:00 pm on Wednesday (8 July).
According to the notice, the suspension of all academic activities would remain effective on Thursday (9 July) as the weather situation had not shown significant improvement. Ongoing waterlogging around the university area and continued transport difficulties were also mentioned as reasons behind the decision.
Earlier, all classes and examinations at the university were suspended on Wednesday following three consecutive days of heavy rainfall, which caused widespread waterlogging and affected transport services. After reviewing the overall situation, the administration decided to extend the suspension for another day.
The disruption has affected examinations across 19 departments and institutes of Chittagong University. A number of undergraduate and postgraduate assessments, including written and oral examinations, have been postponed due to the weather-related difficulties.
Among the affected examinations is the third semester oral examination of the Forestry Department. Examinations from the Accounting Department, including the seventh semester Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) and second semester Master of Business Administration (MBA), have also been suspended.
The fourth semester BBA examination of the Human Resource Management Department, second-year Bachelor of Social Science (Honours) examination of the Political Science Department, and third-year BSS (Honours) examination of the Sociology Department are also included in the postponed schedule.
The second-year Bachelor of Arts (Honours) examination of the Bangla Department, first-year BA (Honours) examination of the English Department, third-year BA (Honours) examination of the History Department and second-year BA (Honours) examination of the French Language and Literature Department have also been affected.
Other postponed examinations include the fourth-year BA (Honours) examination of the Sanskrit Department, seventh semester Bachelor of Science in Engineering and second semester Master of Science examinations of the Computer Science and Engineering Department, and seventh semester BSc Engineering examination of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department.
Examinations of several science-related departments have also been delayed, including fourth-year BSc (Honours) Zoology, first-year BSc (Honours) Botany, fourth-year BSc (Honours) Geography and Environmental Studies, third-year BSc (Honours) Microbiology, third-year BSc (Honours) Physics and second-year BSc (Honours) Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.
The second-year examination of the Institute of Education and Research has also been postponed.
Located in a hilly area, Chittagong University often faces difficulties during periods of heavy rainfall, with waterlogging and transport problems affecting movement to and from the campus. Many students travel from different parts of Chattogram and surrounding areas, making safe and uninterrupted transport a major concern during severe weather.
The university administration has advised students to follow official notices regarding further decisions. Authorities said academic activities would resume once weather conditions improve and the overall situation becomes suitable for normal operations.
