In a scathing critique of the current geopolitical and domestic political landscape, Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim, the Pir of Chormonai and Amir of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB), has alleged that foreign powers are surreptitiously influencing the nation’s democratic symbols. Speaking at an election rally in Patuakhali on Saturday, the influential cleric targeted the scales of justice—traditionally a symbol of the judiciary and specific political iconography—claiming they are now weighted by external interests.

Geopolitical “Weight” and the Demand for Islamic Justice
Addressing a large gathering in support of Mufti Abdul Malek Anowari, the IAB candidate for the Patuakhali-2 (Bauphal) constituency, Rezaul Karim questioned the integrity of the political process. “They claim the scales are a symbol of equity and justice. But what justice is this?” he asked the crowd. “We now see that one side of the scale secretly holds America, while the other secretly holds India.”
He asserted that the Bangladeshi electorate is weary of foreign interventionism. “The people of this country do not wish to see ‘American justice’ or ‘Indian justice’; we demand the justice of Islam,” he proclaimed, positioning his party as the only authentically sovereign alternative.
A Critique of Five Decades of Governance
The Chormonai Pir argued that the secular legal frameworks governing Bangladesh since its inception have failed the common man. He noted that despite 54 years of administration under conventional laws, the “destiny of the ordinary citizen remains unchanged.”
| Era/Theme | Chormonai Pir’s Critique | IAB Proposed Alternative |
| Legal Framework | 54 years of “conventional laws” failed to curb corruption. | Implementation of Sharia-based “Islamic Justice.” |
| Foreign Policy | Secretly influenced by regional and global superpowers. | A sovereign policy independent of India and the US. |
| Political Culture | Cycle of vengeance where the loser must flee the country. | Inclusive governance where the innocent remain safe. |
| National Identity | Blueprints of “power-hungry interest groups.” | Fulfilment of the “Student-People Uprising” aspirations. |
The Vision for a “Golden Bangladesh”
Reflecting on the recent student-led mass uprising, the Amir lamented that the aspirations of the youth—to build a “Golden Bangladesh” free from oppression—are being jeopardised by the “blueprints” of opportunistic political factions. He contrasted the current culture of political vendettas with his party’s vision. “We have seen that when one party takes power, the other flees the country. If Islami Andolan comes to power, no innocent person will ever have to flee their homeland,” he promised.
The Rally and the “Hand-Fan” Appeal
Urging the electorate to cast their ballots for the “Hand-Fan” (Hatpakha) symbol, Karim framed the vote as a moral obligation. “Every single vote for the hand-fan strengthens the forces of Islam,” he declared.
The event was presided over by Mufti Abdul Malek Anowari and attended by senior IAB figures, including Nasir Ahmed Kawsar and Habibur Rahman Misbah. As the 13th Parliamentary Election approaches, the Pir’s rhetoric underscores a tightening race where identity politics and sovereignty remain at the forefront of the national conversation.
