Myanmar’s protracted civil conflict has again erupted into tragedy as a series of military airstrikes targeted civilian gatherings, leaving scores dead and many more injured. At least 27 people, including women and children, were killed in the latest assaults, while numerous others sustained injuries, many of which are reported to be critical. Local sources warn that the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar is becoming increasingly acute.
The deadliest strike occurred on Thursday evening in Kaung Zar village, Bhamo Township, Kachin State. According to the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), a military aircraft deliberately bombed a prayer gathering held in the courtyard of a private residence. Villagers had convened to organise a religious ceremony following the death of a respected elder. The attack was launched without any prior warning, resulting in 22 fatalities at the scene and at least 28 injured, including multiple children.
Kaung Zar has long served as a refuge for families displaced from nearby conflict zones. Survivors reported that the suddenness of the strike left them no opportunity to flee. Images circulating on social media depict bodies scattered across homes and open courtyards, some so mutilated that identification has proved extremely difficult.
KIA spokesperson Colonel Nao Bu asserted that no KIA forces or installations were present in the village at the time of the attack. He accused the Myanmar military of deliberately targeting civilians, stating, “They make no distinction between combatants and ordinary people.” Colonel Bu further warned that schools, religious events, and public gatherings have increasingly become targets in recent months.
On the same day, another airstrike struck Tat Kone village in Anglan Township, Magway Region. Observers report that the attack occurred during preparations for a wedding, killing at least five people, including a child, and injuring several others, predominantly women engaged in cooking and other arrangements.
Analysts note that in recent months, Myanmar’s junta has increasingly relied on airpower against areas suspected of harbouring or supporting resistance groups. Yet, these strikes repeatedly result in civilian casualties, raising grave concerns about violations of international human rights and humanitarian law.
A summary of recent reported airstrikes is provided below:
| Date | Location | Target/Event | Fatalities | Injured |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thursday | Bhamo, Kachin State | Prayer gathering | 22 | At least 28 |
| Thursday | Anglan, Magway Region | Wedding preparations | 5 | Several |
| Tuesday | Rakhine border area | Detention centre | 21 | ~30 |
These successive attacks have instilled fear and uncertainty among Myanmar’s civilian population. Observers warn that without effective and sustained international intervention, the cycle of violence is unlikely to abate, and it is the nation’s innocent civilians who continue to bear the heaviest toll.
