Violent confrontations between residents of two neighbouring villages in Cumilla’s Chauddagram upazila escalated into repeated clashes, arson, and widespread vandalism, leaving multiple people injured and several homes and businesses destroyed.
The unrest unfolded from Saturday afternoon into the night (4 April) across Maskara village under Konkapait Union and Sonapur village under Batisha Union. According to Chauddagram Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abu Mohammad Kawsar Hossain, law enforcement was eventually deployed in large numbers to bring the situation under control after hours of chaos.
Local accounts suggest that the tensions originated from a romantic relationship between a young man from Maskara village and a woman from Sonapur village. On Thursday night, the pair were allegedly detained and beaten by local residents. In the aftermath, a false alarm was reportedly raised in Maskara claiming that “a group of robbers had entered a house” in Sonapur. This announcement quickly inflamed tensions, prompting villagers to take up sticks and launch an attack.
During the initial confrontation, Jahidul Islam Masum, son of Aftabul Islam from Sonapur, sustained serious injuries. He was first taken to Chauddagram Upazila Health Complex and later referred to Cumilla Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated.
Retaliatory violence followed on Saturday afternoon when a group from Sonapur allegedly gathered and attacked Maskara village. In this assault, at least two shops and around twenty houses were vandalised. The situation then escalated further when residents of Maskara retaliated by setting fire to the house of Sadek Mia in Sonapur. The blaze ultimately destroyed four residential structures belonging to his family.
Fire Service teams from Chauddagram rushed to the scene with two units, but by the time they arrived, several structures had already been severely damaged by fire. Officials confirmed that multiple spots were still burning when emergency responders reached the area.
The clashes continued intermittently from late afternoon until nightfall, leaving several individuals injured on both sides. Many of the affected families were forced to flee their homes, and at least one household has reportedly been left homeless and living in the open.
