Cold Wave Persists Across Northern Bangladesh

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has issued a warning as a cold wave continues to affect several regions of the country. According to the latest forecast released on Tuesday morning, 13 January, both daytime and nighttime temperatures are expected to drop slightly over the coming days. The northern districts of Panchagarh, Kurigram, and Nilphamari are anticipated to experience the most significant impacts of the cold wave.

Meteorologists have explained that a subcontinental high-pressure system, currently situated over West Bengal and neighbouring areas, is playing a crucial role in sustaining the cold conditions across northern Bangladesh. Meanwhile, a seasonal low-pressure system over the southern Bay of Bengal is contributing to partially cloudy skies and generally dry conditions. While daytime temperatures are likely to remain relatively stable, night temperatures may decrease marginally.

The current cold wave and temperature forecast for key northern districts are as follows:

DistrictCold Wave IntensityFog ProbabilityNight Temperature (°C)Day Temperature (°C)
PanchagarhModerateLight to Moderate9–1120–22
KurigramModerateLight to Moderate10–1221–23
NilphamariModerateLight to Moderate9–1120–22

The BMD has indicated that over the next 24 hours, skies across the country will remain partially cloudy, with dry conditions prevailing. During the night and early morning, some areas may experience light to moderate fog. The cold wave is forecast to persist for the next 48 hours, with a slight drop in both day and night temperatures across most regions.

Government authorities have urged the public to take precautions against cold-related discomfort and health risks. Elderly individuals, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions are advised to stay indoors, wear sufficient warm clothing, and avoid prolonged exposure to the cold.

Farmers and fishery workers have also been cautioned, as the ongoing cold wave could adversely affect winter crops and aquaculture. Agricultural officials recommend safeguarding crops and ensuring adequate food and water supplies for fish.

Emergency services are on alert in northern and other critical areas, with healthcare facilities and medicine distribution systems prepared to respond as needed. Experts have advised maintaining household warmth and using alternative heating methods if required. By following these guidelines, the adverse effects of the cold wave can be mitigated.

While daily life may be temporarily disrupted due to the cold wave, timely and conscious precautions can significantly reduce its harmful impact.
