Dhaka has been gripped by unrest following the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent political figure and coordinator of the Inquilab Mancha. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali, appealed to protesters on Thursday night to maintain patience and composure, promising that a comprehensive investigation into the fatal shooting would be conducted.
The news of Hadi’s death at Singapore General Hospital late on 18 December triggered demonstrations across the city, including incidents of arson and vandalism. Police forces have been deployed extensively to manage the situation and prevent further escalation.
Commissioner Ali stated, “Our officers are working on the ground to ensure safety and order. We are committed to a fair and impartial investigation into this crime.” He further urged demonstrators to remain calm, stressing that justice for Hadi would be pursued diligently.
Sharif Osman Hadi had sustained a gunshot wound to the head on 12 December while engaging in public outreach in Bijoynagar. Initially treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, he was subsequently transferred to a private facility for further treatment and finally flown to Singapore for advanced care. Despite these efforts, he passed away on Thursday evening.
The DMP continues to monitor demonstrations and urges citizens to express their grievances peacefully. The tragic event has also sparked nationwide debates regarding political violence, security measures for activists, and the responsibilities of law enforcement in ensuring public safety during protests.
