A temporary crack that developed on a railway track near Madhnagar Railway Station in Naldanga upazila of Natore has been repaired swiftly, with authorities confirming that train operations were not significantly disrupted. The incident, which occurred beside pillar number 253, was attributed to severe cold weather causing the metal rail to contract.
According to railway officials, the fracture was first noticed early on Monday morning when local residents spotted an unusual gap in the rail line and immediately alerted the authorities. Despite the visible damage, trains continued to operate along the route under close supervision, albeit at reduced speeds as a safety precaution.
Nazmul Hossain, a member of the local village police and an eyewitness, said he identified the crack shortly after dawn and promptly informed the railway department. “Trains were still passing over the affected section, but the authorities responded quickly once they were notified,” he said. Repair work reportedly began around noon.
Madhnagar Railway Station Master Abdul Awal confirmed that the station received the initial report at 6:35 am. Following standard protocol, the information was immediately relayed to the Santahar Station Master, who coordinated the dispatch of a technical repair team. The team arrived at the site aboard the Barendra train and commenced restoration work without delay.
Mr Awal explained that such incidents are not unusual during periods of extreme cold. “Every year, we see similar cracks develop because metal contracts when temperatures drop sharply,” he said. “These fractures are typically minor and rarely cause major disruption to railway operations if detected early.”
Railway trolleyman Zulfikar Hossain added that senior officials were informed as soon as the crack was identified. He noted that the repair process was carried out efficiently, with restoration completed by approximately 11:30 am. During the repair window, trains were instructed to slow down while passing the affected section to ensure passenger safety.
By Monday afternoon, railway authorities confirmed that the track had been fully repaired and declared safe for normal operations. Train movement has since returned to standard speeds, and no delays or cancellations were reported as a result of the incident.
The episode highlights the importance of local vigilance and rapid response mechanisms within the railway system. Officials reiterated that regular inspections and timely reporting by both staff and residents play a crucial role in maintaining rail safety, particularly during extreme weather conditions.
