Daulatpur Killing Remains Unresolved

In Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia, the killing of religious leader Pir Abdur Rahman has triggered widespread unease and uncertainty, as no legal case has yet been filed even 48 hours after the incident. The absence of formal proceedings has left the investigation in a state of limbo, with law enforcement agencies also confirming that no arrests have been made so far.

According to police sources, the victim’s family initially indicated that they might file a case, but later chose not to proceed with legal action. Officers stated that despite repeated communication, no complaint was ultimately submitted at the local police station, significantly complicating the investigative process.

The deceased’s elder brother, a retired schoolteacher, explained that the family had collectively decided against pursuing a case. He expressed that they believed legal proceedings would not bring back their loved one and would only result in prolonged hardship and procedural difficulties. He also cited their physical limitations due to age and the burden of navigating a lengthy judicial process. He insisted that the decision was made independently, without any external pressure or influence.

Local residents have linked the incident to a controversial short video clip, reportedly around 30 seconds long, which circulated on social media some years ago. The footage allegedly contained remarks attributed to the deceased that were considered offensive by certain groups, leading to rising tensions in the area in recent days.

The situation escalated on Saturday morning when a large crowd gathered near the Pir’s religious establishment. By midday, the gathering reportedly swelled to over a hundred people, who later entered the premises and carried out an attack. Eyewitnesses claim that police were present during parts of the confrontation. The violence culminated in the death of Abdur Rahman amid the chaos.

Following the attack, the mob allegedly vandalised the one-storey structure and adjoining tin-shed buildings, and set parts of the complex on fire. Fire service teams later arrived at the scene to bring the blaze under control. Several individuals inside the premises were injured, although many managed to escape during the turmoil.

A widely circulated 18-minute video on social media shows a large group advancing towards the site while chanting slogans and later engaging in extensive vandalism.
