Smith Backs Idea of Cricket Club World Cup

Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith believes that the Indian Premier League (IPL) has become the central force in the evolution of modern cricket. He stated that since the launch of the IPL, several other countries have introduced franchise-based leagues inspired by its model. Smith further suggested that there is an opportunity to introduce a Cricket Club World Cup featuring champion teams from different franchise leagues.

Smith, who holds the record for captaining South Africa in the most Test matches and victories, is currently serving as the commissioner of South Africa’s domestic T20 league, SA20.  he shared his views on the impact of franchise cricket and the inclusion of cricket in the 2028 Olympic Games.

According to Smith, the IPL, launched in 2008, transformed the presentation of cricket globally. He said the league demonstrated how commercially large a competition could become, how effectively it could engage fans, and how it could elevate the standard of the game. He added that every subsequent franchise league has drawn lessons from the IPL model in some form.

Smith also observed that leagues in South Africa, England and Australia have adopted structural elements and auction systems influenced by the IPL. He expects that in future global cricket, there will be around four to five major franchise leagues, each allocated specific windows in the international calendar, with the IPL positioned at the top of this structure.

Proposal for a Club World Cup

Smith has proposed the possibility of a global club competition in cricket, similar to football’s Club World Cup. He suggested that champion teams from major franchise leagues could compete against each other on an international stage.

He stated that a tournament involving winners of leagues such as the IPL, SA20, Big Bash League and others could significantly increase the global appeal of T20 cricket and provide a new competitive platform for fans.

Smith noted that franchise cricket has already created a new ecosystem, with privately owned teams forming a key part of the sport’s structure. He acknowledged that while the idea would require significant planning and coordination, the existing framework makes such a competition possible.

He further emphasised that the continued growth of franchise cricket has been supported by rising global television audiences and increased private investment in the sport. In his view, the IPL remains the leading competition within this structure due to its scale and the presence of many of the world’s top players.

Cricket at the Olympics

Smith also highlighted the return of cricket to the Olympic Games as a significant development. Cricket will feature in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, marking its first appearance since the 1900 Paris Games.

He noted that athletes across sports often regard Olympic success as a distinct achievement. He referred to examples from other disciplines where Olympic medals hold special significance, even alongside other major tournaments.

At the 2028 Games, cricket will be played in the T20 format between 12 and 29 July at the Fairplex venue in Los Angeles. Both the men’s and women’s competitions will feature six teams each.

Smith said that the opportunity to compete for an Olympic medal could add a new dimension to cricket and provide fresh motivation for the next generation of players.
