Deadly Gang Attack Rocks Haiti’s Artibonite

At least 70 people have been killed in a brutal gang attack in Haiti’s Artibonite region, one of the country’s primary agricultural hubs, according to the human rights organisation Défenseur Plus. The violence, which included widespread arson of homes, has displaced thousands and raised fresh concerns about Haiti’s ongoing security crisis.

Reports from Al Jazeera indicate that the attack began in the early hours of Sunday in and around the rural area of Jean-Denis and continued until Monday morning. Gang members reportedly set homes ablaze, destroyed property, and terrorised residents, leaving the local population in a state of panic.

The humanitarian impact has been severe. Défenseur Plus estimates that nearly 6,000 people have been forced to flee their homes. Previous United Nations data suggested that over 2,000 residents had already abandoned their dwellings in nearby areas due to escalating armed violence in recent days.

Authorities initially reported 16 fatalities and 10 injuries. Meanwhile, the Civil Protection Agency’s preliminary assessment recorded 17 deaths and 19 injured, with the majority being men. These figures, however, remain contested, with human rights observers suggesting that the true toll may be far higher.

In a briefing, a United Nations spokesperson confirmed that the UN office in Haiti is closely monitoring the situation, estimating that the number of deaths could range from 10 to 80. The spokesperson called for a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

In a joint statement, Défenseur Plus and Collectif to Save Artibonite condemned the lack of response from security forces, saying, “The authorities’ failure to protect the Artibonite region from armed gangs represents an extreme example of governmental negligence.”

The attack underscores the deepening insecurity in Haiti, particularly in rural agricultural zones, where armed gangs increasingly operate with impunity. Humanitarian organisations have warned of the urgent need for effective security measures to prevent further loss of life and mass displacement.

The international community continues to monitor the situation, highlighting that without immediate intervention, the ongoing gang violence may further destabilise the country and exacerbate the already severe humanitarian crisis.
