Over the past ten days, a series of maritime tragedies in the Mediterranean has left scores of migrants dead or missing, the United Nations’ International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reported. In a statement released on Monday, the agency warned that the final death toll could be significantly higher, underscoring the route as one of the deadliest migration corridors in the world.
According to IOM, a boat that departed from Sfax, Tunisia, capsized near Italy’s Lampedusa island. Of those rescued, three perished, including a pair of one-year-old twins. The mother, a national of Guinea, survived the ordeal. She reported that her children succumbed to hypothermia. A male passenger also lost his life in the same incident.
Survivors further indicated that another vessel had departed from Sfax at the same time, but its fate remains unknown. Search-and-rescue efforts have been severely hampered by adverse weather conditions. In a separate incident near Malta, a commercial ship rescued several survivors, yet the fate of approximately fifty individuals who had been aboard remains uncertain.
Meanwhile, off the coast of Tobruk in Libya, a distinct boat disaster has raised fears for 51 lives, with IOM expressing grave concern. The agency condemned the trafficking of migrants in unseaworthy vessels, particularly during stormy conditions, describing it as both criminal and life-threatening. “Exploiting vulnerable people by overloading them onto unsafe boats in turbulent seas is reprehensible,” IOM stated.
The organisation’s statistics reveal that at least 1,340 migrants lost their lives in the Mediterranean during 2025 alone, highlighting the persistent dangers faced by those attempting to reach Europe by sea.
The following table summarises the most recent incidents:
| Date / Period | Location / Origin | Fatalities / Missing | Key Details |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18–27 January 2026 | Sfax, Tunisia → Lampedusa | 3 killed (2 children, 1 adult) | Mother and children rescued; additional boat missing |
| 18–27 January 2026 | Near Malta | 50 missing/deceased | Survivors rescued by commercial vessel; verification ongoing |
| 18–27 January 2026 | Tobruk, Libya | 51 feared dead | Boat capsized; rescue operations ongoing |
The Mediterranean continues to be a perilous passage for migrants, with IOM emphasising that illegal and hazardous sea journeys place countless lives at immediate risk. The agency urged international authorities to maintain heightened vigilance and prioritise human rights protections, highlighting the urgent need for coordinated action to prevent further tragedies.
