Death of BGB Member in Kurigram After Shooting Himself with Own Rifle

In a tragic incident on the Bangladesh–India border, a member of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) lost his life after accidentally shooting himself at the Fulbari sector of Kurigram district. The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, around 1:30 AM, according to official sources.

The deceased, Sepoy Md. Nasim Uddin, 23, was assigned to the Gangarhat Border Outpost (BOP) under the Lalmonirhat 15 BGB Battalion. Hailing from Khajura village in the Sadar Upazila of Jhenaidah district, Nasim was the son of Babul Mondal.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Sepoy Nasim had donned his uniform and armed himself with his rifle to conduct a routine border patrol late at night. While moving near the eastern boundary of the camp barracks, he reportedly discharged the weapon into his own chest. The sound of the gunshot alerted his colleagues, who rushed to the scene and found him lying in a pool of blood.

He was immediately carried to the barracks veranda and subsequently transported to Fulbari Upazila Health Complex. Unfortunately, doctors on duty declared him dead on arrival.

The Fulbari police were notified of the incident and recovered the body on Friday morning, 2 January, around 10:30 AM. The body was then sent to the Kurigram morgue for post-mortem examination.

Fulbari police officer-in-charge (OC) Mahmud Hasan Naeem confirmed the incident and stated that an unnatural death case has been filed at the local police station. “No complaints have been received from any party. Investigations are ongoing,” he added.

Lieutenant Colonel Mehedi Imam, commanding officer of Lalmonirhat BGB Battalion, said, “Preliminary evidence points to suicide. However, further inquiry is underway. The soldier was reportedly suffering from mental health issues.”
