Dengue Death Toll Reaches 50 as 534 New Patients Hospitalised

Bangladesh’s dengue situation continues to deteriorate, with three more people dying from the mosquito-borne disease in the past 24 hours and 534 new patients being admitted to hospitals across the country.

The latest figures were released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in a statement issued on Wednesday, 29 July. The deaths bring the country’s total dengue fatalities this year to 50, while the cumulative number of hospital admissions since the beginning of the year has risen to 14,690.

According to the DGHS, the three people who died during the latest reporting period were receiving treatment in different parts of the country. One death was recorded in an area under the Dhaka South City Corporation, while another occurred in the Barishal division and the third in the Mymensingh division.

The latest increase in hospital admissions highlights the continuing pressure posed by dengue, particularly as the disease remains a recurring public health concern in Bangladesh. The infection is transmitted primarily by the Aedes mosquito, which can breed in stagnant water collected in containers, discarded items and other small spaces around homes and urban areas.

Health authorities have repeatedly stressed that controlling dengue requires sustained efforts at both household and community levels. Removing standing water from rooftops, balconies, gardens, construction sites and other potential breeding grounds can help reduce mosquito populations. People are also advised to remain alert to symptoms associated with dengue and seek medical attention promptly if they develop signs of illness.

The rising number of cases also places additional demands on hospitals and healthcare workers, particularly when large numbers of patients require treatment at the same time. Early diagnosis and appropriate medical care are considered important in managing dengue, as some patients can develop severe complications that require close monitoring and hospital-based treatment.

The health authorities have urged the public to increase awareness and take preventive measures to destroy mosquito breeding sites. They have also called for collective action, as regular cleaning and removal of stagnant water are essential to limiting the spread of the disease.

With 14,690 people already hospitalised and 50 deaths recorded this year, the latest figures underline the need for continued vigilance. Public awareness, environmental cleanliness and coordinated mosquito-control measures remain central to efforts to contain the outbreak and prevent further loss of life.
