M A Kaiyum, a candidate in the Thirteenth National Parliamentary Election, has publicly questioned the credibility of the outcome in the Dhaka-11 constituency, asking how a contender unable to appoint polling agents at every voting centre could secure a substantial number of votes.
Kaiyum, who contested the seat under the sheaf of paddy symbol representing the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, made the remarks during a press conference held on Friday afternoon (12 February) outside his campaign office in the capital. Although he did not mention his rival by name in every instance, his comments were widely understood to be directed at Nahid Islam, the convenor of the National Citizens’ Platform (NCP) and candidate of an 11-party alliance, who was declared the winner by a narrow margin.

Allegations of Irregularities
Kaiyum stated that he had “serious objections” to the declared results, alleging widespread manipulation and what he termed “engineering” of both the voting and counting processes. Particular concern was raised over postal ballots, which he claimed had influenced the final tally disproportionately.
According to Kaiyum, his polling agents were obstructed from performing their duties at several centres, and in certain locations his supporters reportedly faced intimidation and physical assault. He argued that if a candidate lacked organisational presence at the grassroots level—reflected in the inability to deploy agents across most polling stations—it was legitimate to question how such a candidate could obtain overwhelming support.
He further alleged that emotional appeals linked to the “July warrior” identity were used to sway voters and create confusion, thereby undermining the principle of a level playing field.
Appeal to the Election Commission
Kaiyum confirmed that he has formally applied to the Bangladesh Election Commission for a recount. Should the Commission fail to take what he considers satisfactory action, he signalled his intention to pursue legal remedies. He warned that disputed results risk eroding the legitimacy of the government formed through the election and could cast a shadow over the democratic process.

Political Implications
Despite his defeat, Kaiyum maintained that his political journey would continue. He declared that although he is not entering Parliament, his party remains on a path towards power and he will persist in working for his constituency. Among his pledges is a commitment to rid the area of narcotics and criminal activity.
Political analysts observe that post-election disputes are not uncommon in Bangladesh’s competitive political landscape. However, a formal recount petition combined with the threat of legal action may heighten tensions in Dhaka’s political arena. The next steps taken by the Election Commission—and any subsequent judicial proceedings—are likely to determine whether the controversy subsides or escalates further.
