Dhaka-18: NCP Candidate Allegedly Attacked

Allegations have emerged that Ariful Islam, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidate for the Dhaka-18 constituency, was attacked on Monday morning in the Dumni Nurpara area under Khilkhet Police Station in the capital.

The incident was confirmed by NCP leader Arifur Rahman Tuhin, who described the attack as politically motivated. According to Tuhin, a group of assailants, reportedly led by BNP leader Didar Molla, targeted Ariful Islam while he was conducting his morning outreach and public engagement activities in the constituency.

“This morning, while our candidate was visiting the area for routine public interaction, a group of BNP-affiliated goons launched a violent assault,” Tuhin said. “Yesterday, our supporters were already harassed by BNP workers. Although the BNP candidate, S.M. Jahangir, was informed and assured us that no further incidents would occur, this attack took place the very next day.”

Ariful Islam, speaking after the incident, expressed resilience and determination despite the attack. “Our team is strengthening its defensive arrangements. Even if it costs my life, I will continue with the programme, Inshallah,” he said.

Political analysts have expressed concern that such incidents reflect an increasingly tense environment in Dhaka-18, with heightened friction between rival party supporters ahead of the upcoming elections. NCP leaders have urged the authorities to ensure the safety of candidates and voters, emphasising that political violence threatens the democratic process.

The police have yet to release an official statement regarding the allegations. Local residents reported that the area remained tense for several hours following the attack, with additional security forces deployed to prevent further clashes.
