A sombre cloud descended over the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on the second day of the 12th edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), as a tragic and deeply distressing incident unfolded moments before play was due to begin. Mahbub Ali Zaki, the assistant coach of Dhaka Capitals, passed away after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest at the venue, sending shockwaves through Bangladesh’s cricketing community.
The incident occurred approximately twenty minutes before the scheduled start of Dhaka Capitals’ match against Rajshahi Warriors. As players from both teams were engaged in routine warm-up sessions in front of their respective dressing rooms, members of the coaching staff were also present on the field. Without warning, Zaki suddenly collapsed during the warm-up period, prompting immediate concern among those nearby.
Team officials and medical staff rushed to his aid, and emergency procedures were initiated without delay. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was administered on the field before he was swiftly transported by ambulance to Al Haramain Hospital in Sylhet. In an official statement, Dhaka Capitals later confirmed that Zaki had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit in critical condition. Despite the best efforts of the attending medical professionals, he could not be revived and was pronounced dead due to a cardiac complication.
Eyewitnesses at the ground described the atmosphere as profoundly distressing. Mahbub Ali Zaki had been a familiar and respected figure in Bangladesh’s domestic cricket circuit for many years, known for his dedication to player development and his calm presence in the dressing room. His sudden passing left players, officials and support staff visibly shaken.
In a difficult decision that underscored the professional demands of the tournament, the match went ahead as scheduled. Dhaka Capitals captain Mohammad Mithun won the toss and opted to bowl first against Rajshahi Warriors. Those close to the team later acknowledged how emotionally challenging it was for the players to take the field so soon after losing a colleague and mentor.
This tragic event has once again highlighted the physical and emotional vulnerabilities that exist even in elite sporting environments. It is not the first such incident in domestic cricket this season, adding to growing concerns around health monitoring and emergency preparedness at sporting venues.
Mahbub Ali Zaki’s death has cast a deep pall of grief over Bangladesh cricket, with tributes expected from across the sporting fraternity. His contribution to the game, though largely behind the scenes, will be remembered with respect and gratitude.
