In observance of the sacred night of Shab-e-Barat, all forms of fireworks and firecrackers have been strictly prohibited across Dhaka Metropolitan City. The announcement was made on Tuesday, 3 February, through a public notice signed by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali.
The notice states that Shab-e-Barat will be observed from midnight on 3 February with due religious solemnity. To maintain public order and preserve the sanctity of the occasion, the DMP has invoked Section 28 of the DMP Ordinance, 1976, enforcing a city-wide ban on activities that could disrupt peace or cause danger.
According to the DMP, the following activities are strictly forbidden within Dhaka city limits from 6:00 PM on 3 February until 6:00 AM on 4 February:
| Activity | Duration | Area Covered | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fireworks and firecrackers | 3 Feb 6:00 PM – 4 Feb 6:00 AM | Entire Dhaka Metropolitan City | Mandatory ban for all individuals and shops |
| Lanterns (fanus) and gas balloons | 3 Feb 6:00 PM – 4 Feb 6:00 AM | Entire Dhaka Metropolitan City | Not permitted in any open space |
| Sale, purchase, or transportation of explosives | 3 Feb 6:00 PM – 4 Feb 6:00 AM | Entire Dhaka Metropolitan City | Punishable offence under law |
The notice further warned that violations of this prohibition will result in legal action, urging residents to celebrate Shab-e-Barat peacefully while avoiding fire hazards or accidental explosions.
Shab-e-Barat holds special significance in Islam, observed through night-long prayers and supplications seeking forgiveness for past sins and blessings for the future. In recent years, the celebratory use of fireworks and lanterns in Dhaka has contributed to an increase in fire incidents and accidents. In response, the authorities have imposed these strict safety measures to prevent any untoward incidents.
Additionally, the DMP has increased surveillance at key locations across the city through multiple police stations. Individuals or businesses found violating the restrictions will face immediate legal consequences, including potential fines or imprisonment, under the applicable law.
Residents are being encouraged to observe Shab-e-Barat with devotion, keeping public safety and fire hazards in mind, ensuring that the night remains spiritually meaningful without endangering life or property.
