In a concerted effort to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) conducted a large-scale footpath clearance operation along the busy corridor from Malibagh Rail Gate to Rampura Kacha Bazar on Saturday, 4 April. The operation, led by the Traffic Division, aimed to remove long-standing encroachments that have hindered smooth movement for pedestrians and vehicles alike.
The clearance began at 10:00 a.m. and continued until 12:00 p.m., focusing on both sides of the road. Small shops and stalls that had illegally occupied footpaths for years were demolished, and their goods were confiscated. In addition, vehicles parked unlawfully along the roadside, including several mini-trucks and motorcycles, were addressed through legal action.
Summary of Clearance Operation
| Category | Details | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Shops dismantled | Numerous small vendors along footpaths | Obstructions removed |
| Confiscated items | Merchandise from shops | Prevented further footpath blockage |
| Fines imposed | 5,000–10,000 Taka per shop | For storing goods on pedestrian pathways |
| Illegally parked vehicles | Mini-trucks and motorcycles | Legal cases filed against owners |
Special Metropolitan Magistrate Mahidur Rahman, overseeing the operation, noted that a public notification had been issued on 23 March warning shopkeepers to vacate footpaths. “Many business owners complied following the notice. Those who remained were warned, and fines were imposed on several for continuing to place items on pedestrian pathways,” he said.
The Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of the Traffic Division, Motijheel, stressed that the operation is part of a sustained effort to restore order on Dhaka’s roads. “We are committed to reclaiming footpaths and roads from illegal occupation. These measures will continue in other congested areas to ensure safer and more accessible streets for all,” he stated.
Local residents have expressed approval of the initiative, highlighting the challenges posed by encroachments and illegal parking, which frequently contribute to traffic congestion and unsafe conditions for pedestrians. By enforcing strict measures, including demolitions and fines, authorities hope to instil compliance among vendors and vehicle owners, paving the way for a more orderly and pedestrian-friendly cityscape.
The DMP has indicated that such operations will be conducted regularly to ensure that roads and footpaths remain clear, reflecting a long-term commitment to improving urban mobility and safety in Dhaka.
