Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Acting Commissioner, Md. Sarwar, has issued an advisory urging residents to take precautions to safeguard both themselves and their valuables during the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr festivities. He emphasised that cash, gold, or important documents should not be left unattended at home; instead, they should ideally be entrusted to relatives. For those without family in Dhaka, such items may be deposited under police supervision at local stations.
At a press conference held at the DMP Media Centre on Sunday, Commissioner Sarwar outlined the security arrangements designed to ensure a safe journey for those travelling out of the city and to maintain law and order in a temporarily depopulated Dhaka. “All necessary preparations have been completed to guarantee citizens’ safe travel and to curb criminal activity in the empty city,” he stated.
The DMP has issued a set of precautionary recommendations for residents before leaving their homes:
Ensure all doors and windows are securely locked.
Disconnect or secure electricity, gas, and water connections.
Keep CCTV systems operational and ensure adequate lighting around the residence.
In anticipation of Eid, DMP has significantly strengthened security across the capital. Key checkpoints and patrol measures are outlined below:
| Security Measure | Details |
|---|---|
| Mobile Patrol | Over 300 motorcycles and vehicles deployed daily |
| Night Checkpoints | More than 70 fixed checkpoints operational |
| Special Surveillance | Residential, commercial, and diplomatic areas under heightened watch |
| Terminal & Station Security | 4 bus terminals, 1 launch terminal, and railway stations monitored |
| Malls & Marketplaces | 1,000 police personnel deployed from morning until late night |
In addition, mobile courts will be active on major roads and highways to enforce traffic regulations, prevent racing, curb excessive speeding, and address congestion issues.
Commissioner Sarwar also noted that special attention will be given to preventing snatching, pickpocketing, and organised theft during the holiday. Uniformed and plainclothes officers will patrol both homes and commercial establishments, while also monitoring public transport to prevent harassment of passengers or overcharging.
The comprehensive measures by DMP are aimed at ensuring that citizens can enjoy a safe and secure Eid, with both their journeys and assets well protected in a temporarily quiet city. Residents are encouraged to follow the guidance to minimise risks and ensure a peaceful festive period.
