Dhaka Police Warn: Cars Will Be Seized for New Year Racing

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has issued a stern warning that vehicles involved in illegal motor racing during New Year’s Eve celebrations—commonly referred to as “Thirty-First Night”—will be seized immediately. The announcement was made on Thursday by DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali during a press briefing at the DMP headquarters.

The briefing coincided with preparations for Christmas and New Year festivities, with police officials convening a meeting to ensure public safety and smooth traffic flow across the capital. The commissioner emphasised that security measures would be stepped up to allow citizens to celebrate religious and cultural festivals without disruption.

“We must ensure that the public’s normal movement is not hindered by security arrangements. Sufficient measures will be in place so that Christmas is observed with solemnity, while also maintaining a festive atmosphere,” Commissioner Ali said.

Authorities reported that 73 churches across Dhaka will hold Christmas services, and the DMP has increased cyber patrolling to counter rumours and misinformation. Intelligence monitoring has also been intensified in key areas to prevent untoward incidents.

Regarding New Year’s Eve celebrations, the commissioner cautioned: “Everyone must remain vigilant to prevent any unpleasant incidents. We strongly advise against motor racing. Any vehicles found racing on the streets will be impounded without exception.”

Additional Police Commissioner (Administration) Md. Sarwar added that any public event on New Year’s Eve will require prior approval from the authorities. Police will monitor the purchase and sale of fireworks and explosives to prevent accidents, and the public is urged to avoid firecrackers, sky lanterns, and other hazardous activities.

The DMP’s advisory highlights a proactive approach to public safety during a period that historically sees a spike in traffic violations, noise disturbances, and minor accidents. By enforcing strict measures, the police aim to protect citizens, maintain law and order, and ensure festive celebrations proceed safely.
