Dhaka, 26 December – The capital is experiencing a pronounced deepening of winter, with cold air sweeping in from the north and northwest. Early on Friday morning, temperatures in the city fell to a striking 13.5°C, while a thick blanket of fog enveloped Dhaka, intensifying the sense of cold. The combination of chilling winds and high atmospheric moisture has made conditions particularly severe for residents.
Meteorological records show that at 6:00 am today, Dhaka’s temperature was 14°C, with humidity reaching 95%, enhancing the biting cold. The previous day’s maximum temperature was 19.5°C, highlighting the significant overnight drop.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has warned that this sharp winter chill is expected to continue over the next few days. While daytime temperatures may rise slightly, early morning fog and brisk northwesterly winds of 6–12 km/h are likely to persist, maintaining the wintry conditions.

Across other parts of the country, moderate to dense fog is anticipated, reducing visibility and potentially disrupting road traffic. Inland waterways may also experience delays or temporary suspension due to low visibility. The BMD has urged commuters and drivers to exercise caution and plan travel carefully.
Experts note that such a drop in temperatures at the close of December is a normal effect of persistent northerly winds. Nevertheless, for vulnerable communities, particularly the underprivileged and floating populations, the cold can be especially harsh. Moreover, prolonged fog may pose a threat to winter crops, raising concerns over potential agricultural losses if the conditions continue.
Residents are advised to take precautions to stay warm, and travellers are encouraged to remain vigilant during journeys through fog-affected areas. The combination of early morning chill, high humidity, and dense fog makes careful planning essential for both daily commuters and those venturing out longer distances.
