Dhaka has mobilised unprecedented security measures in preparation for the 13th National Parliamentary Election and the accompanying public referendum. The city’s authorities are determined to ensure a safe, transparent, and orderly voting process, with heightened police presence across key locations, polling stations, and surrounding roads.
On Wednesday, 11 February, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), outlined the comprehensive security strategy at a press conference held at Minto Road. He reported that a total of 26,515 police personnel have been deployed across various polling stations throughout the capital.
Talebur Rahman emphasised that security measures extend beyond the immediate vicinity of polling stations. “Striking forces, mobile units, and reserve contingents are strategically positioned outside polling centres to respond swiftly to any unforeseen incidents,” he said. He further noted that specialised units—including the SWAT team, K-9 unit, bomb disposal squad, and crime scene vans—are on standby to handle emergency or complex situations.
The Deputy Commissioner added, “Checkposts and patrol operations have been significantly reinforced across the city. Our officers are committed to maintaining maximum vigilance and discipline. So far, there have been no verified threats or reports of sabotage. We anticipate a peaceful and impartial election.”
Addressing voter concerns, he assured citizens: “Everyone can exercise their fundamental right to vote without fear. The police are here to guarantee your safety.” When asked about potential security threats, he clarified, “While no specific threat is expected, our preparations are comprehensive, and all police units remain on high alert.”
The table below summarises the DMP’s election-day deployment and responsibilities:
| Unit / Force | Responsibility | Personnel / Resources |
|---|---|---|
| General Patrol & Checkposts | Routine security across streets and neighbourhoods | All station-based patrol units |
| Striking Force | Emergency rapid response | 500–700 officers |
| Mobile Unit | Mobile support and polling station security | 200–300 officers |
| Reserve Force | Additional support as needed | 1,000 officers |

Through this integrated security framework, Dhaka authorities aim to guarantee that the election process is conducted safely, peacefully, and transparently. Voters can participate without apprehension, confident that law enforcement will remain vigilant throughout the day.
