Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor Niyaz Ahmed Khan has announced his intention to step down from his post, citing a desire to conclude his tenure after steering the university through a challenging period.
Speaking at a press briefing held on Tuesday afternoon in a virtual classroom adjacent to the Vice-Chancellor’s office, Professor Khan reflected on the university’s journey during his tenure. “I feel that we have reached a satisfactory stage in fulfilling the responsibilities entrusted to us, and now I wish to step aside,” he stated.
Professor Khan emphasised that Dhaka University is not merely an academic institution but a national institution whose decisions and operations are presented to the public. “In line with this tradition, I am here today to inform all stakeholders of my plans regarding the Vice-Chancellor’s position,” he added.
He recalled the circumstances under which he assumed office in late August 2024, describing them as extraordinary and urgent. “At that time, the university was practically paralysed. Academic activities had halted, student halls were in a state of flux, and the administrative machinery had become ineffective. My first priority was to restore academic operations and bring stability to the institution,” he said.
Over the past 18 months, he noted, significant progress has been achieved. “With the collaboration of colleagues and the support of the university community, we have managed to overcome the emergency situation and lay the foundation for an upward trajectory across academic, administrative, and student affairs. While challenges remain, the overall trend is positive.”
Professor Khan reiterated that his decision to resign is guided by a commitment to ensure continuity and avoid any administrative vacuum. “I am willing to remain temporarily if the government or university stakeholders feel that a smooth transition requires additional time, ensuring no disruption occurs during the handover process,” he said.
The following table summarises key milestones during Professor Khan’s tenure:
