In a striking case of alleged fuel hoarding, authorities in Kotalipara upazila of Gopalganj district recovered a 200-litre barrel of diesel concealed beneath the waters of a pond, following a targeted mobile court operation on Sunday (5 April) afternoon.
Acting on confidential intelligence suggesting unlawful stockpiling of fuel for profit, a mobile court led by the Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate, Md Masum Billah, conducted a swift inspection in the Hizalbaria area under Kandi Union. The operation culminated in the recovery of the concealed diesel drum from beneath the pond’s surface.
According to officials, the fuel had reportedly been hidden with the intention of selling it later at inflated prices, taking advantage of market fluctuations and supply pressure. Authorities described the act as a clear violation of regulations governing the storage and distribution of petroleum products.
Following the recovery, the mobile court held proceedings on the spot. Based on witness statements and available evidence, the individual identified as responsible—AsmA Khatun, a local fuel trader and wife of Nazrul Islam of Hizalbaria village—was fined 10,000 Bangladeshi Taka for unlawful storage and attempted profiteering.
Officials emphasised that the operation forms part of an ongoing drive to prevent artificial shortages and market manipulation in essential commodities, particularly fuel oils. They further warned that strict legal measures would continue to be enforced against individuals or groups involved in hoarding or illegal storage practices.
Executive Magistrate Md Masum Billah stated that such operations are being intensified to ensure market stability and protect consumers from unfair pricing tactics. He reaffirmed that mobile courts will remain active in monitoring suspicious activities related to essential goods.
