A digital fuel card system has officially been introduced in Rangamati, marking a significant step towards bringing greater transparency and order to fuel distribution in the district. The initiative has been jointly implemented by the district administration, the army, and the police, with the aim of preventing fuel stockpiling, reducing chaos at petrol stations, and ensuring fair access for consumers.
From Wednesday morning, four fuel stations across the town began operating under the new system. Large banners displaying QR codes have been installed at each station, and registered customers are now required to scan the code before being able to purchase fuel. Once scanned, the system displays the user’s previous transaction history, including quantity and timing, helping authorities prevent repeated or excessive fuel purchases by the same individual.
Officials state that the platform has been designed primarily to address irregularities in fuel distribution, especially during periods of high demand. By digitising the process, authorities aim to minimise overcrowding at filling stations and eliminate the possibility of artificial shortages caused by bulk purchasing.
However, the initiative has also created difficulties for sections of the population, particularly those living in remote and hilly areas who lack access to smartphones or stable internet connectivity. Many residents, especially farmers and daily wage earners, have reportedly struggled to complete the registration process or understand the digital requirements.
Public response to the system has been mixed. Some consumers have welcomed the move, saying it promotes fairness and prevents individuals from hoarding fuel in advance. Others, however, argue that the system risks excluding vulnerable groups who are less digitally literate.
A manager at Messrs Hill View Filling Station, Mohammad Ismail, noted that the introduction of the fuel card has already improved discipline at petrol stations. He added that queues are now more organised and fuel dispensing has become significantly smoother compared to previous manual systems.
