DMP Commissioner Sheikh Sajjat Ali Submits Resignation

Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali, the Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), has formally submitted his resignation, citing family reasons. The resignation letter was signed on Wednesday, 25 February, and submitted to the Police Headquarters.

Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali assumed the role of the 38th Commissioner of DMP on 21 November 2024. His appointment came during a period of fragile law and order in the capital, requiring immediate attention and strategic leadership.

Born on 25 March 1961 in Dhaka into a respected Muslim family, Sheikh Sajjat Ali began his distinguished police career on 21 January 1986 as an Assistant Superintendent of Police. Over the decades, he held various significant positions at both field and administrative levels, demonstrating a consistent record of service.

He served as Additional Superintendent of Police in Jhenaidah, Police Headquarters, and SB, and later as Deputy Commissioner in DMP. He also held the post of Superintendent of Police in Narail, Bagerhat, and Lakshmipur districts, and was appointed Commissioner of Khulna Metropolitan Police. Upon promotion to the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG), he oversaw the Highway Police, Chattogram Range, Police Headquarters, and Dhaka Range.

Notably, Sheikh Sajjat Ali participated in United Nations peacekeeping missions and undertook extensive professional training both in Bangladesh and abroad. He also served as a member of the Police Reform Commission established by the current government. In November 2016, he was serving as Additional Inspector General of Police at Police Headquarters at the time of his mandatory retirement.

On the personal front, Sheikh Sajjat Ali is married and the father of three children—two daughters and one son. His parents are Sheikh Wajed Ali and Mrs. Nurjahan Begum.
